Using Mobile Phones in Project Management

By February 2nd, 2009

This morning, I stumbled upon an article on PCWorld, which lists the Philippines as the top country that sent SMS (short message service) through the mobile phones.

This is not surprising at all for Filipinos have really taken the texting world to heart.  In fact, many claim that they feel naked, handicapped if they don’t have their cellular phones with them. If they had left it at home, they wouldn’t mind being late to the office or to their appointments, they would go back home and get their cellphones.

Thus, mobile phones here are also important tools in managing remote workforce. This is especially helpful when a team member goes on a field research. You get to update each other of the progress, and when there are issues and problems that need to be resolved, you can talk about it right away.

I remember when a team member one time sent me a text message saying that the manager of the resort wanted to talk to me. I immediately called them and the manager and I were able to talk. The deal was clinched right away! And the resort was an off-island in Mindanao.

Having mobile phones really makes a difference: contact is made instantly, and decisions can be had right away.
