The Importance of Documentation
In college, we were taught by our research professors to always document, that is acknowledge the source of your information. I remember that no matter how brilliant our paper was, if it lacked in documentation, it could get a low mark.
Little did I know that I would encounter again the importance of documentation at what I do now.
In web development, documentation is that part where the developer takes down all the tasks he did to finish his project. This would include source code files, description of functions, overview flow of process, site map, even layout, and theme.
Sadly, I knew about this when the web developer of one of my projects left. The programmers who succeeded him had difficulty taking on from where he left off. As a project manager, I learned my lesson: always ask the programmer to make some documentation.
I’m glad the programmer of my other projects have documentation without me telling them to do so. Such smart people! I’m blessed to have them.
